In the 1980’s we “Took control of our IT by tossing out the mainframes in favor of PCs” which eventually turned into large scale server farms running individual business tasks. Since 2000, server virtualization promised lower costs by consolidating system tasks from many low-cost servers into fewer higher cost virtualization oriented servers. This failed gloriously as most modern virtualization environments have costs dozens to hundreds of times more expensive than the servers they replace.
What would happen if we reintroduce the highly resilient “on-line transaction processing” or OLTP using modern cloud technologies deployed on Raspberry Pi grade systems?
This talk will be presented by Darren Starr, Chief Engineer at the Scientific Computing Services section at the IT Department of the University of Oslo.
